Why is My Air Conditioner Not Working?

It feels like the warmest day of the season and your air conditioner isn’t working like it should. It may not be cycling on at all, or it may be running but your home feels hot, humid, and miserable. You’re likely wondering why your AC isn’t working and you want to know what you can do to get your family cool and comfortable as quickly as possible.

Common AC problems

Below are some of the most common causes of air conditioner breakdowns. If you feel that any of these issues are occurring in your home, contact a cooling professional as soon as you can to take care of the problem.

Thermostat issues

The first thing you should do when you notice your AC isn’t working like normal is to check your thermostat. The device may have accidentally been turned off, or switched to “HEAT.” Or perhaps someone in your home accidentally adjusted the temperature. If these don’t seem to be the cause of the problem, swap the thermostat’s batteries out if it’s been a while since you’ve replaced them. A weak battery may not be sending the appropriate signals from the thermostat to your air conditioner, thus leaving you with a warm and uncomfortable home.

Frozen coils

If there are issues with airflow in your AC, you may notice ice forming on your cooling system’s coils. This is a common problem that is often the result of an air filter that is full of dirt, dust, and other contaminants. When air can’t properly pass through the system, the obstruction affects the return air ductwork and can lead to ice forming on the unit’s coils. Additionally, this problem is sometimes caused by low refrigerant levels in your system.

Inadequate refrigeration

The purpose of refrigerant (coolant) in your air conditioner is to cool the air that passes through the system and out through your ducts. If your system is leaking coolant, or if the refrigerant isn’t properly charged, you’re going to have a home that feels warmer than it should. It’s important to get refrigerant problems taken care of immediately, especially if it’s a leak, since this material can be harmful to the environment.

Defective wiring

If your air conditioner was recently installed and you’re experiencing problems with a warm home, the issue may be faulty wiring. When your AC isn’t properly set up, the result is a system that isn’t able to keep your home cool by removing humidity from the air. Problems with wiring need to be taken care of as soon as possible since they could result in a fire.

Outdoor condenser problems

Your outdoor condenser is responsible for transferring heat from the unit’s cooling process back to the outside air. If this component isn’t working properly, heat may get stuck in the compressor and cause it to prematurely break down or experience wear and tear that affects the overall efficiency of your cooling system.
