Cold Rooms? Here are 5 Ways to Warm Up!

Now that the weather is getting chillier, you may have noticed that one or more of your rooms aren’t as comfortable as you’d like. There could be many causes for this, such as blocked or restricted vents, or the areas may be the furthest away from your heating system.

Regardless of the cause of your cold room(s), here are a few simple tricks that could help warm you up!

1. Let the sunlight in.

Make a note of which windows are south-facing as these are the windows that will let in the most sunlight during the colder months of the year. When the sun is out, open your window blinds and curtains to let in natural light. You may be surprised by how much the sunlight can warm your space! Once the sun begins to set, close the blinds and curtains to help preserve the heat generated by your furnace or boiler.

2. Dress in layers.

Get comfortable and wear sweatpants, socks, hoodies, jackets or anything that will cover your legs, feet, and arms. This will help to keep your natural warmth contained and close to your body. In addition, have layers of blankets and sheets on your bed. It’s a smart idea to have multiple layers there so if you wake up hot in the middle of the night, you can shed a few of them!

3. Seal window and door frames.

Add weather stripping to cover any openings or holes in the frames. These areas are notorious for heat loss during the fall and winter months. To determine whether or not there are drafts around your windows or doors, you can move your hand around the frame. If any spots feel colder than the rest, they will likely need to be sealed.

4. Have a warm drink.

Prepare hot chocolate or a warm cappuccino in your favorite mug. Even just holding the cup in your hands will help you to warm up quickly. Just be careful not to burn yourself.

5. Add rugs to your floor.

If your tile, marble, laminate, or wood floor is cold and uncomfortable under your feet, consider adding a rug to help with trapping heat. Floors that are not insulated may account for up to 10% of a room’s heat loss. You may also consider having carpet installed for a more permanent solution.

As the weather continues to get cooler, these tips will help you stay warm and cozy in the coldest areas of your home!
