Spring Cleaning Safety

Before you bring out your spring cleaning supplies, there are a few things you need to have in mind to keep yourself and your family safe.
  1. Be sure to read the label on the bottle(s). The label should tell you exactly what chemicals are inside the cleaning product. Only use the product as it the label instructs you to do so.
  2. Organize your cleaning cabinet or closet. Keep all bottles and cleaning supplies out of a child’s reach. If your cabinet is floor-level, install a child-safe lock on the doors. Also, keep all cleaning supplies in their original containers so you know exactly what they are and can re-read the products’ labels when necessary.
  3. Safely dispose of your cleaning products when necessary. Check to make sure that the product(s) you are using are not expired. If they are, dispose of the bottle or container as the product’s label instructs.
  4. Only use the product as directed. While you may have found a “recipe” online for getting rid of grime, mold or stains, do NOT mix your cleaners. This can result in dangerous chemical reactions.
  5. Know the number for poison control. If someone accidentally inhales or ingests a cleaning product, call 800-222-1222. This is the number for Poison Control and Prevention.
Plan your spring cleaning for “down” time when your children are at school, day care or napping. That way, you won’t need to worry about them getting into cleaning supplies as you use them.
